Do you teach 1st position or 2nd position harmonica?
* This question is regarding a style of harmonica playing that is especially popular with blues harmonica playing – which is called 2nd position harmonica.
I believe that teaching through playing 2nd position (cross-harp) before the student has a solid grip on 1st position (straight harp) is a mistake that confuses the whole notes layout for the student, and is also very restricting – for mostly blues playing and not much beyond. So, for a more versatile approach, I teach through 1st position, and then also open up the world of 2nd position harp when you have a solid control of the harmonica.
